childhood favorites

all i wanted was to live in a fairy tale, apparently.

The Frog Princess
E.D. Baker

At this point in my life, fairy tales were basically true stories. Reading retellings gave me a thrill, as if I was getting an insider look at what really happened.

Princess Academy
Shannon Hale

This may have been the first time I felt the atmosphere of a book. The cold stone floor of Miri's house. (I loved the name Miri.) Outside, the mountain air felt like the edge of a knife against my cheek. I couldn't see much else behind the fog. Just grey.

The Doll People
Ann M. Martin & Laura Godwin

What did dolls do when we went to sleep? Tiny toys with their own tiny little lives in their own tiny little house and their tiny little rooms? I needed to find out!

contemporary

the genre where nothing really happens - and i love it.

Open Water
Caleb Azumah Nelson

The prose is beautiful and lyrical. Everything truly flows together like water. And there's even music woven into this. I am in awe of the gift Nelson has.

Writers & Lovers
Lily King

This is the Perks of my mid-20s. I felt heard. King evokes the feeling of being left behind as a hopeless adult so well. Prime example of pure feeling; show not tell.

The Book of Goose
Yiyun Li

I enjoyed journeying through the French countryside with Fabienne and Agnès. There were many details that felt like only a native French person would know, and yet, Li is Chinese-American. Incredible writing. Stories about close relationships are my favorite.

memoir

an acceptable form of eavesdropping.

Making a Scene
Constance Wu

I didn't know much about Constance before this, but she gave me a new appreciation for memoirs. I love how she used scripts to convey the more delicate events of her life. What a queen. There's no age when it comes to growth and reconciliation.

Yearbook
Seth Rogen

I read this back in 2021 and it's still the funniest book I've read. If you need a pick-me-up, pick! This! Up!

Crying in H Mart
Michelle Zauner

A beautiful reflection on death, grief, and identity. She inspires me to write non-fiction pieces.

Pourin' Down Rain
Cheryl Foggo

Quaint and loving amidst the hardships. I would like to write about my life like her.

mystery

my least read genre.

The Secret History
Donna Tartt

Hefty and like wading through molasses in terms of pacing, but it had me on the edge of my seat. I've never turned the pages faster.

Piranesi
Susanna Clark

The adult version of The Maze Runner. A unique read that had me finishing it in a little over a day.

romance

this is how i keep my hopeless heart at bay.

The Happy Ever After Playlist
Abby Jimenez

This is the fastest I believed a fictional relationship. The chemistry was there for once. The reunion? The concert? Yes.

Holiday Romance
Catherine Walsh

As romcom as it gets in a wintry landscape. It's predictable but that's exactly why I enjoyed it. If you need a dependable love story, you're looking right at it.

The Unhoneymooners
Christina Lauren

So cute that it made me want to experience having a crush again...

sci-fi

sci-fi > fantasy.

The Memory Police
Yōko Ogawa

There's something about a world that exists in a haze that is both haunting and comforting. I felt so at peace reading this, similar to the experience of reading Never Let Me Go.

The Light Pirate
Lily Brooks-Dalton

I love introspective storytelling where the inner dialog is as important, if not, more important than the plot itself. Authors typically have a pattern of writing that can get tiresome. Not with this novel. Every word felt intentional. I wish to write like her.

Satellite Love
Genki Ferguson

I love when the cover matches the mood of the book. It is very much a misty blue dawn - melancholy and pure. The writing was absolutely beautiful and the characters full of life. I wish to write like this someday.

teenage favorites

the age i discovered dystopian stories.

Uglies
Scott Westerfeld

I judged a book by its cover (compliment) and was introduced to the world of sci-fi dystopias. I love getting a glimpse into what the near future could look like. More importantly, this book made me love the name Zane.

Maximum Ride (series)
James Patterson

I had always wondered how an old man could write teenagers so well. (Answer: ghostwriters). Anyway, the wings and action was secondary to Max and Fang's relationship. I wanted an emo boy to love me, too, LOL.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Stephen Chbosky

Charlie was me. I was Charlie. Feeling understood and seeing I wasn't alone meant the world to me as an angsty teenager who didn't know where she was going.

The Maze Runner
James Dashner

The concept drew me in and did not disappoint.

The Catcher in the Rye
J.D. Salinger

Were you really an angsty teen if this wasn't your favorite book at some point? Looking back, Holden Caulfield was simply an immature toolbag. I guess I was just as angry at the world as he was.

A Thousand Splendid Suns
Khalid Hosseini

My grandma left this in my room after having already flown thousands of miles away. Curiosity got the best of my tears in the end.
